Cats are a big part of our veterinary practice and have unique diseases, health concerns, and nutritional needs. Advances in recent years concerning proper nutrition, diabetes management, dentistry and pain management have greatly benefited our ability to help your cat live a healthy and comfortable life.
We conduct thorough history-taking, examinations, and in-house diagnostic testing for many conditions. For more complex conditions, samples are sent for more in-depth diagnostics. With this approach and support we are able to diagnose, treat, or manage diseases of our cat patients.
Until recently, there were very limited pain management options for cats. However, recent research has resulted in the development of protocols for the use of drugs previously used in other species to now be used safely and effectively in cats. It was discovered that we only needed to understand how cats metabolize the drugs and what the appropriate dosing should be. Now we can provide much greater comfort to our feline patients after surgery or dental procedures, as well as for those cats suffering from arthritis or wherever long-term pain management is needed.
Cats are carnivores meaning they stricly eat meat in nature. Traditionally we have fed them a diet that has too many carbohydrates, causing obesity. Consequently, obesity can result in diabetes, arthritis, neuropathies (painful, cranky cats), and urinary trat issues. Therefore new diets have been developed to provide the proper nutrition for the specific needs of feline health and with various lifestyles and health conditions. This has been very helpful especially in the area of managing diabetes mellitus.
Proper oral care is important to the health of cats. Cats are prone to oral inflammatory conditions (stomatitis) and cavitation lesions on the neck of a tooth. Both conditions are painful and serious problems that we can treat or manage as part of dental care.
Cats can develop various skin conditions that may be caused by infectious parasites like fleas, mites, ticks or lice, as well as allergies. Ear infections are also very common. We can diagnose most conditions by examination and testing to help these patients.
